MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For many Memphians, the days of rent discounts and pandemic prices are long gone.

Rent prices in Memphis are among the highest they have ever been.

According to realtor.com, the median rent in Memphis is $ 1,150. This is an increase of 23 percent from the same period last year.

“A lot of people are being forced onto the streets just because they can’t pay their rent,” said Britney Thornton, CEO of JUICE Orange Mound.

Thorton said the housing crisis in the Mid-South was bad before the pandemic. Now it’s getting worse and worse.

“And now we have individuals who have little to no savings with the rising rental costs, and that’s really robbing a lot of people of their rights,” she said.

The Thornton nonprofit works to improve the lives of the people of Orange Mound. She said that right now the focus is on getting rental information and helping utilities for those who need it.

“I think the biggest fault is the big disconnect between service providers and people in need,” she said.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said federal funding has enabled the city and county to help more than 7,000 people pay their rent and utility bills during the pandemic.

He said the city is also working on building more affordable housing in different areas.

“In a lot of the cities you see across the country, growth has taken over so much that poor residents and even middle-income residents are being forced to leave because they can’t afford to be there. “said Strickland. “We don’t want that.”

“I would just say don’t suffer in silence. Please feel free to contact the neighborhood advocates you have and other organizations, ”Thorton said.
